"Mercedes-Benz boasts that its second-generation GL, which will be unveiled to the public at this week’s New York auto show, is “all-new.” Indeed, we have no reason to doubt any claims that this truck has little mechanically in common with its predecessor, the first GL. But with this truck looking rather like a longer version of its ML platform mate, “all-new” may be a case of quite literally stretching the truth. This wouldn’t be much of a big deal—the last M- and GL-classes also shared quite a bit underneath, after all, and we liked the previous GL just dandy. But the latest ML is a bit of a downer in the drive department, which has us a bit worried about this next version of one of our favorite luxury SUVs.

Familiar Bones

Other than the length, the two Mercedes people haulers are nearly congruent dimensionally. Both are 84.3 inches wide and the 350 and 450 models have the same rear track. (Front tracks for the 350 and 450 are just 0.3 inch different from ML to GL). To fit a third row of seats, the GL rides on a wheelbase stretched by 6.2 inches and is a foot and a half longer overall.

Cosmetically, the GL and ML appear to share front doors, but are otherwise pretty different. the GL has been given its own, far more aggressive style, and we have to say it’s pretty handsome. Up front, the crossover features projector lamps and some LED light signatures, as well as a simple two-slat grille. A rising rear fender flare starts ahead of the wheel arch and then curves up and around toward the rear; it’s a familiar design element common to many modern Benzes and might be most successful here. For some stylistic familiarity, the first-gen GL’s D-pillar design was reapplied to this new model.

The ML parallels pick back up inside. The entirety of the GL’s forward cabin—the dashboard, gauge cluster, steering wheel, door panels, seats, center console and armrest, and buttons—looks identical to that of the M-class. At minimum, this tells us what we can expect from the GL’s passenger compartment; we generally like the materials and overall ambiance in the smaller ML.

Power and Money

Power for the GL comes from three sources, and they’re divvied up among GL350, GL450, and GL550 models. The GL350 features a 3.0-liter BlueTec diesel V-6 making 240 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque, hefty increases from the 210 hp and 400 lb-ft stumped up by the outgoing diesel GL. The GL450 and GL550 once again use V-8 power, but this time they get two tunes of the same engine: Benz’s widely used twin-turbo 4.7-liter V-8. It makes 362 hp and 406 lb-ft in the GL450, up from 355 hp and 339 lb-ft of its predecessor’s naturally aspirated 4.7. The GL550 now boasts 429 hp and 516 lb-ft; the outgoing model’s naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V-8 produced 382 hp and 391 lb-ft.

All three engines mate to a seven-speed automatic transmission, and all GLs come with 4MATIC all-wheel drive and Benz’s Airmatic air suspension. As was the case before, the diesel 350 and the gasoline 450 include essentially the same equipment and features. Both come standard with 19-inch wheels and offer optional 20s. MB-Tex synthetic leather is the default seating material in the GL350 and 450. Given that the 2013 GL probably will start north of $60,000, we’d expect actual leather to be included.

This being a Mercedes-Benz, there are plenty of safety gizmos and technological baubles, including active headlights that turn around corners and dip to avoid blinding other motorists; radar-based cruise control and lane-keeping assistance; fully automated parking; and a motorized “Easy Entry” system that powers down the second row of seats so passengers can get to the third. Much of this stuff is among the plethora of kit included on the range-topping GL550.

Pricing will be released closer to the GL’s September on-sale date. We don’t expect it to drastically increase from that of the first-gen GL, which started at $62,445 for the entry-level GL350 BlueTec and rose to a stunning $86,175 for the GL550.

Mercedes-Benz is pitching this new model not just as a family hauler with luxury stirred in, but as a luxury vehicle in and of itself: Interior refinement is said to rival that of the S-class. The new ML leans much more toward coddling than stimulating, so it’s a claim we can see being true. Whether the GL’s refinement comes at the expense of the driving experience—as it did in the current ML—will take some seat time and instrumented testing to find out.
