"Following the introductions of both the 2012 BMW 650i and the 2012 BMW M5, it became pretty apparent what the next-generation M6 would offer. BMW has confirmed those anticipatory feelings with the full release of the new BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible for 2013. It is everything we were expecting, which is a good thing!
The 2013 BMW M6 will share its engine with the BMW M5. It is the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine first seen in the X5 M and X6 M twins. Horsepower is up five and torque is up two from the two aforementioned SUVs to 560 hp and 502 lb-ft, respectively. It is a more-dramatic increase compared to the old M6, offering 60 more hp and a whopping 119 more lb-ft of torque compared to the V-10 found in the 2010 M6. At the same time, fuel consumption and harmful emissions are reduced by approximately 30 percent compared to the old car, says BMW. Aiding in efficiency is a brake-energy recuperation system and an automatic engine start-stop function.
The engine is mated to a seven-speed double-clutch transmission and sends its power down to an active rear differential, which takes into account the position of the gas pedal, the rotational speed of the wheels, and the car’s yaw rate to optimize power delivery by transferring it between the rear wheels.
Like the 650i, the M6 uses aluminum for the hood and doors to reduce weight. It also uses molded thermoplastic for the front fenders and a glass-fiber composite for the trunk lid and the convertible compartment cover on the convertible model. To lower the car’s center of gravity and the vehicle’s overall weight, the roof of the M6 Coupe will remain a carbon-fiber unit. Despite these weight-saving efforts, the coupe will weigh 179 more pounds than the 2010 model. The convertible’s weight, on the other hand, is reduced by 86 pounds.
On the test track, the gains in power equate to a zero-to-62-mph time of 4.2 seconds for the coupe and 4.3 seconds for the convertible. That’s a 0.3 of a second drop from both the 2010 coupe and convertible models. In addition, the sprint 0–124 mph takes only 12.6 seconds for the coupe and 13.1 for the convertible. The top speed of both models is electronically limited to 155 mph.
For the twisty roads, BMW has stretched the car’s track widths by 1.2 inches and placed electronically controlled shock absorbers, offering Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus modes, as standard. The electric steering can also be adjusted to one of three setting named the same as the suspension’s settings.
Bringing the M6 to a halt are massive 15.7-inch rotors at the front and 15.6-inch at the rear, both with six-piston fixed calipers. Optionally available for the first time on a BMW M car are carbon-ceramic brakes. These humongous 16.1-inch rotors at the front and 15.6-inch rotors at the rear are made of a carbon-fiber ceramic compound, presenting a greater resistance to heat and a reduction in unsprung weight (by nearly 42 pounds!). The carbon-ceramic brakes use six-piston fixed calipers at the front and, in a weird twist, single-piston floating calipers at the rear. If you don’t hear the ceramic-brake option, you can easily spot it by its gold-colored calipers.
Like the new 650i, the new M6 is longer, lower, and wider than ever before. BMW says the increases aid in passenger comfort, specifically rear seat room, but, from our drive in the new 650i, we would still not recommend the backseat for larger adults or for longer stints. We also noticed that trunk space was lacking in the base car.
The convertible has always offered a unique convertible mechanism. Its two rear fins help keep the appearance of a coupe by appearing like large C-pillars. It also provides a small rear window that can be raised or lowered independent of the cloth top. This allows the rear window to be down when the top is up to push more air through the cabin or up when the top is down to act as a wind deflector and aid in a quieter cabin.
The new M6 Convertible will be the first to arrive in the U.S. in June 2012. The M6 Coupe will take a little longer, arriving later in the summer of 2012.
