"It’s impossible to review a vehicle like the 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BlueTEC without asking one very important question:
Will Americans ever embrace diesel?
Diesel engine technology took a huge leap with the use of common-rail direct injection (CDI) in the 1990s. CDI utilizes electronic fuel injection, as opposed to the earlier mechanical fuel injection that dominated diesels previously. CDI allows much quicker and more precise metering of fuel, which in turn results in quieter, cleaner-burning diesel engines. Gone are the clattering, smoky engines of the past.
Europeans have long embraced diesel-powered passenger cars. Diesel fuel requires less refining than gasoline. Diesel packs more punch than gas — about 147,000 BTU per gallon for diesel versus 125,000 BTU per gallon for gas. And diesel puts off less CO2, CO and hydrocarbons than gas.
Diesel has its downsides as a fuel, too. Burning diesel versus gas results in higher levels of nitrogen compounds and soot, both of which can be very harmful to human health. Because of increased demand, diesel has lost its price advantage over gasoline in the past few years. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Gas and Fuel Update, the average gallon of highway diesel fuel sold for $3.887 during the week ending 11/07/11, as opposed to $3.424 for gasoline. Diesel prices have risen more quickly than gas prices over the past year, and there’s no indication that the trend will reverse itself.
Still, Mercedes-Benz continues to throw energy (and money) behind diesel.
Mercedes-Benz has a long history with diesel engines, dating back to 1936 and the first production diesel-powered passenger car, the 260 D. In 1997, MB introduced electronic fuel injection to diesel passenger car engines with the C 220 CDI. The BlueTEC label has been attached to Mercedes’ diesel cars since 2006, and the first BlueTEC SUVs hit the showrooms in 2008. BlueTEC engines use a urea-based fluid called “AdBlue” to reduce nitrogen compound emissions by 80%.
The 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BlueTEC is a full-size, three-row SUV that is aimed squarely at the North American market. With base prices starting at $61,570 (as tested estimate $73,000), the GL 350 comes with a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty and EPA fuel economy estimates of 17 mpg city/21 mpg highway.
GL’s exterior design is sophisticated and elegant. Somehow, the overall shape of the body manages to convey a much more compact impression than the vehicle’s actual measurements (200.6″ long/76.4″ wide/72.4″ tall) reveal. It’s actually kind of a jolt to discover a third row of seats inside the GL, especially a relatively roomy row. A tapered greenhouse, presenting a nearly trapezoidal aspect to the SUV when viewed from the rear, partly creates this optical illusion. Crisp body lines and rich paint give the GL that Mercedes class, and standard 20″ alloy wheels give it a rugged appeal. Big headlamps and taillamps delineate the corners for good visibility. Slanted rectangular dual chrome exhaust pipes peek out from the rear fascia. The details have been attended to on the GL. A subtle “BlueTEC” badge dresses each front fender, and the GL 350 name is balanced with a modest chrome “BLUETEC” appended on the opposite side of the tailgate. Other than that, there’s no exterior advertisement about the vehicle’s diesel powerplant." - http://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonfogelson/2011/11/11/2012-mercedes-benz-gl-350-bluetec-test-drive-and-review-a-hug-for-diesel/
