"
The oft-rumored Bentley SUV has arrived--albeit in concept form, as the Bentley EXP 9 F, at this week’s Geneva Motor Show.

Bentley describes the EXP 9 F, which could kick off a third model line (next to the Mulsanne and Continental ranges) for the ultra-luxury automaker, as a “compelling new take on the Grand Touring Bentley,” calling it “equally at home at an opera gala performance, on the sand dunes and the overtaking lane of the autobahn.”

With an increasingly diverse customer base, adding a high-end sport utility vehicle makes good sense to Bentley. As many Bentley owners also own SUVs from other automakers, introducing one under the Bentley brand allows the automaker to retain a higher percentage of customer business. An SUV is seen as essential in attracting buyers in developing markets, too.

The challenge was creating an SUV that exceeded customer expectations. Bentley’s director of design, Dirk van Braeckel, explains that the “EXP 9 F had to represent the absolute pinnacle of the sport utility sector, setting a new benchmark for this type of vehicle.”

Starting with a clean sheet of paper, Bentley’s designers incorporated familiar styling elements such as the matrix grille, round lamps and signature character lines. Like all Bentley models, the EXP 9 F Concept had to convey the “hewn from solid” design language that sets all Bentleys apart.

In keeping with Bentley’s “visible engineering” theme, the daytime running light apertures serve as the intakes for the W-12 engine’s charge coolers, and each sports a turbine fan design. The turbine theme is carried over to the 23-inch alloy wheels, and outback, the taillights are styled to look like the engines of a jet fighter, glowing from within and projecting light outwards.

Inside, Bentley blends luxury, technology and utility. There are the expected elements, such as wood, leather, and polished metal, but TFT “virtual” instrumentation adds a bit of contemporary functionality. Floor mats are reversible, with one side being silk wool (for city use) and the other crafted of saddle leather (for the outdoors).

Seating is 4+1, and the rear seats can be easily folded and stowed for increased cargo capacity. When in place, the seats allow users to stay connected via mounted tablet computers, and the center armrest hides a cooled compartment for champagne and glasses. Bespoke picnic baskets and a retractable awning make the EXP 9 F ideal for an afternoon in the country.

Drivers get the benefit of 3D navigation, and can choose between Comfort, Sport and Off-Road driving modes. While the concept uses Bentley’s 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged W-12 engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, both the new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 or a future hybrid drivetrain could be used in its place.

Bentley will base a production decision on the feedback received from Geneva Show attendees. While an SUV may represent a dramatic break from tradition at Bentley, if its customers demand all-terrain capability, Bentley is happy to address their needs." - http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1073680_bentley-reveals-its-exp-9-f-luxury-performance-suv-concept

"We first saw the 2012 Audi A8 Hybrid back at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show but at the time Audi was short on details and coy about when the car might be launched.

We can now confirm that the A8 Hybrid is set for sale in Europe next year, complete with its four-cylinder and electric motor hybrid combo and gas mileage of 36.75 mpg (European combined cycle figure stated).

Remember, the A8 is a full-size luxury sedan and in hybrid guise delivers a healthy 245 horsepower and 345 pound-feet of torque. CO2 emissions are 238.18 grams per mile.

Audi has gone with a parallel hybrid setup for the A8 Hybrid, meaning either its four-cylinder engine or electric motor can power the vehicle.

The electric motor, mounted inside the transmission housing, is rated at just 54 horsepower, though it can power the car solely at speeds of up to 60 mph. On electric power alone, the total driving range is only 1.86 miles.

The four-cylinder engine, meanwhile, is a 2.0-liter TFSI unit rated at 211 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

A multi-plate clutch that operates in an oil bath connects or disconnects the electric motor and the TFSI engine. Note, drive is sent to the front wheels, and not all four as is the case with the rest of the A8s sold in the U.S.

Powering the electric motor is a smallish lithium-ion battery that ways around 80 pounds. It is located in a crash-proof area in the trunk. It provides 1.3 kWh of nominal energy and up to 54 horsepower (40 kW) of power.

A brake energy recovery system is also fitted to help top up the battery.

Performance numbers are impressive for a car of this size, with the 0-60 mph coming up in 7.7 seconds and top speed rated at 146 mph.

2012 Audi A8 HybridIn visual terms, the A8 hybrid is distinguished by subtle details. The ten spokes of its alloy wheels--which have a diameter of 18 inches as standard and 19 inches as an option--are designed to mimic turbine blades.

Additionally, the body features hybrid badges, and Arctic Silver is available as an exclusive paint finish. Metallic paint finish, three-zone automatic air conditioning, LED headlights and a Bose system all come standard. Stay tuned for pricing details closer to next year’s sales launch." - http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1065389_2012-audi-a8-hybrid-preview

"All-new for 2013, the Acura RDX takes what was good about the previous model--its just-right size, nimble handling, and attractive design--and makes them better, while working on the rough spots. Those rough spots included a slightly too-rough ride, laggy power delivery paired with a balky transmission, and somewhat lackluster gas mileage. They're mostly smoothed over in the 2013 RDX.

It's not often that a car manufacturer gets so far out ahead of the curve that it's forced to retrace its steps, but in some ways, that's exactly what happened to the Acura RDX. Offered in turbo four-cylinder form well before that was the happening thing in luxury vehicles, let alone crossovers, many eschewed the smaller Acura for the MDX or went to rival brands offering six-cylinder models.

Fast forward a few years, and those rival brands are now bringing out their own turbocharged four-cylinders and Acura has moved to a 273-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 engine. While that might seem like a step backward, it's actually more fuel efficient, slightly more powerful (at peak) and noticeably smoother in its power delivery. All of those things make the move away from turbocharged small-displacement engines back to V-6 territory a sensible one, despite the shifting sands of the rest of the market. Fuel economy of the new V-6 picks up as much as 5 mpg highway over the previous 2012 RDX.

Behind the wheel, the new RDX feels nearly as peppy as the previous model off the line, though the surge of the 2012 model's turbo added some excitement that's not present in the linear power delivery of the new V-6--though that's not really a criticism. Under full throttle, the RDX willingly merges with speedy freeway traffic, readily passes 50-mph two-lane slow pokes, and generally zips around like you'd expect a luxury crossover to do. It also handles the road well, absorbing big bumps with ease while remaining composed in windy sections. It owes this behavior to its new two-stage dampers, which include a secondary floating piston that activates in certain driving conditions to control body motion and improve handling without sacrificing ride comfort.

The transmission, on the other hand, lags slightly behind driver inputs, particularly when a two- or three-gear downshift is required (hard acceleration from moderate speeds, as in passing), balking for just a moment before grabbing the gear and accelerating as desired. The issue was noticed in both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive models, indicating it's not a problem of the on-demand distribution of torque to the rear wheels.

Exterior design of the 2013 RDX is slightly changed from the 2012 model, though not markedly so; the prominent grille is made slightly less noticeable, the fender arches are slightly more pronounced, and the overall design is smoother and more mature. Inside, the interior is all-new, with characteristic Acura high-tech style, but thankfully less reliance on bright, hard plastic elements and more soft-touch, matte-finish items. A preponderance of bright-finish chrome in the center stack is eye-catching, but clashes slightly with the look and makes sunny days a chore of avoiding reflected glare, seemingly catching the sun from every angle.

The cabin itself is quiet--very, quiet, in fact, and comfortable. Front-seat space is ample for even those over six feet tall, yet an eight-way power adjustable seat and tilt/telescoping steering column offer adjustability for most heights and body types.

Technology abounds, as you expect with Acura, undercutting the competition on the equipment available for the price--though you won't find some of the higher-end features BMW and Mercedes-Benz offer on the list of available upgrades, such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and parking assistance. What you will find, however, is standard dual-zone climate control, cruise control, keyless entry with push-button start, ambient lighting, a seven-speaker sound system with USB/MP3/Auxiliary support, Bluetooth handsfree calling, and more--all standard. An available Technology Package adds navigation with voice controls, real-time traffic and weather, a 10-speaker Acura/ELS audio system, GPS-linked climate control, SMS texting support, and Pandora app functionality.

Most of this technology comes off well, notably the excellent Acura/ELS audio system, which produces clear, enveloping sound even at very low volumes. The navigation system is relatively easy to use, and functions well, but the display--though high-resolution--looks a bit dated in comparison to the large, wide-aspect screens in BMWs and the sharp, color-coordinated displays from Audi.

As a crossover, it's not all about passenger comfort and tech goodies, however. There's also the matter of cargo space and utility--that's what sets it apart from an equivalently-priced sedan, after all. Here, the RDX is right in the zone for its compact crossover class, with 26.1 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, 61.3 cubic feet with the seats folded flat, and 76.9 cubic feet including under-floor storage. Even so, it's aimed at younger pre-children couples and slightly older couples with children off to college, not so much at families, kids, and the attendant gear." - http://www.thecarconnection.com/overview/acura_rdx_2013
